Raven on edge

I found lots of ravens on a southwest road trip, and this one posed on the edge of a cliff at the Goosenecks in southern Utah. The river and shadow below made for an interesting background, although I had to remove some specular highlights in the upper left. This also represents selective tweaking of brightness levels and a crop on right edge for ratio.

D3S, 200-400 @400, f11, 1/500, -0.7 ev spot, iso 1100.

C&C encouraged.

Wonderful detail of what I find a most difficult subject, black birds. You nailed it. :jump: :jump:

I really like the iridescent shine that brings out the feather detail and the background compliments the raven's color. It would of been nice to have not so bright of a foreground as my eye goes there first then up to check out the raven but you get the shot when you can,
excellent overall detail on the larger version.

It's very difficult to get this much detail in a raven and I think you've done a fine job of it here Lon. Usually there's at least some blocked up blacks but I don't see any of significance in this image. I especially like the background colors with this bird. Hope you had a fun and productive trip to my neck of the woods.

Great image of this black bird. I like the upturned toes and bit of red on the beak.

Very neat image, Lon. Excellent job on the exposure and I like the perch. The bird's inquisitive pose makes this special.

I really like the way the light reflects off the Raven's feathers, the clarity you caught in the eye is wonderful as well, nicely done Lon :^)

Very nice exposure on this one Lon! This is not an easy subject to photograph and not just because of the blacks....every time I point anything at a Raven, they take off. Smart little buggars..

Excellent exposure, POV, and details Lon, really like that BG also.
I might prefer the bird looking up or towards the viewer, but this works fine too.
Besides, he has got to look where he's stepping
Well done :toast:

Marvelous shot Lon, love the way the light falls on the subject as well as the way you caught one foot off the ground. Wishing you a wonderful year ahead :^)
