Rainy Day Falls & Fern

Took the short hike to Shelving Rock Falls, one of my favorite local waterfalls, between downpours last Friday. The fern perched on the rock caught my eye for a foreground element. I tried cropping this many ways, but found that this mostly full frame view (cropped from 4x6 format) was the one I liked best. I realize most of the interest is on the right side, but cropping just seemed to make that big rock on the right dominate the scene too much.

If I get a chance and the right light, I may go back and try shooting with the tilting center column extended out to the left and down a little. That's as far as I can move because the tripod feet (and mine) are perched on the edge of another waterfall just downstream.

Canon 50D
Sigma 17-70; Circ. polarizer
Three exposures: 0.5 sec.; 1 sec.; 2 sec. @ f/16
Hand-blended in CS5

I think it works fine Wayne. The left-right-left again flow of the water leads the eye through the photo well. The fern does provide a nice anchor. My personal taste would be for a touch more saturation, but... that's personal  .

Really a lovely image. Perfect shutter speed. The fern in foreground really compliments the image.

The composition is working for me. Processing looks a little flat - the rocky areas may benefit from some darker shadows.

Hi Wayne,

Hope all is going well for you! At first glance I was a little thrown off by the composition and the dominant rock up front kind of blocking the lovely cascades. But in taking some time, reading your description and enjoying the rest of the details in the image, I'm really liking this. There is a lot to enjoy and the frame is filled beautifully, top to bottom and side to side. There's a haze in the air which immediately translates to mist from the falls. And just as you described, the fern up front does provide a lovely anchor. I'd say job well done on this capture Wayne.

I really like the composition on this Wayne, chosen shutter speed too. I might boost contrast just a wee bit.

Nice shot Wayne I like the composition just fine. This looks like a place where you could spend a lot of time exploring in dtail and come up with a fair amount of keepers and this is one IMO. Might benefit from a slight saturation boost but I'm a color freak so consider the source. Well done. :toast:

Looks like a very difficult scene to compose effectively. I like the approach you took here and don't see any clear room for something better . . . your idea of swinging the center column to the left and down might help add a bit more visual appeal if it allows the foreground water to become a more dramatic element of the scene. But this works just fine for me. I could see darkening the shadow areas in the midground a bit more, particularly to the left of the falls; the foreground and background shadows feel just about right to me.

Beautiful Wayne. One of the few falls I've not seen in person in the Adirondacks. Makes we want to go there.
