Coopey Creek Cascade

This little cascade is along the trail to Angels Rest, one of the premier hikes in the Columbia Gorge. I've passed this multiple times and never before been able to come up with a composition that pleased me.
Canon 5DMk2, EF17-40mm 4F/L at 17mm. Polarizer. 3 exposures blended, some HDR, mostly manual. primary exposure iso 200, f16, 0.7sec. Some Orton processing.
The larger version is (I think) better.

I like the composition a lot, the sunstar is a good size for the image, but the orton processing / blur effect is a bit too over the top for me.

Well, the composition certainly pleases me, however, at the risk of nit-picking the yellow leaf in the LRC grabs my eye but that's VERY minor. The highlights shining thru the trees are hot but I think they convey an intensity that works well with the rest of the image. The Orton also works pretty well IMO. Nice. :toast:

Nice image. I do agree the orton is a little heavy..if you could scale it back a touch I think the image would be perfect.

I love the sunstar and the composition.Personally I don't like the blur effect though. it's a bit too strong for my taste. But it fits the scene well and makes it a bit romantic and dreamy......so that means the orton effect works well here.

Congratulations on snagging such a great shot from an oft-passed scene! I really like this Daniel, in fact I'd say it's one of my favorites of yours. The cascade is very nice, especially the texture of that spray in the middle, and the flow of the stream works well. The framing of the rocks and vegetation is lovely, and the star is well-done icing. The Orton is, probably always will be, a controversial personal taste sort of thing. I like it occasionally, and think it works the best with this sort of scene (waterfall, green vegetation).

This is totally awesome, Daniel. One of your best. Surprised it hasn't gotten more commentary too. The light is absolutely magical and I just love the water texture too. The Orton fits the scene nicely, though it may be just a tad strong for my taste.

Here's a little less intensely processed version. Thanks for the feedback!

Beautiful shot ( I prefer the repost )! I find the yellow leaf to be a distraction and would clone or crop it out. I see it more as a centre piece of it's own comp. :toast:

I much prefer the second version, but if you wanted to reintroduce the stronger orton effect in to the more distant areas in the top of the image you could. The distracting portion of the blur was mostly in the foreground for me.

Great job

The framing an blur are very effective here. Has a bit of a Paradise feel to it.

Daniel,

Beautiful and dreamy no doubt. Aside from some selective reduction of the effect (like the yellow leaf) I think this is very well done. Borderline "Photo Art," but I'll just leave that as is and not move it. I love the light here and your processing has enhanced and beautified it's effects. Very striking, I could look at this for a while.

I think this looks very nice Daniel. I too think the blur effect is a tad heavy on the bottom half only. If you resolved that it would be a winner in my book. Maybe 1/2 the effect graduated? I like the 2nd version but might be too extreme the other way?

When I first looked at your image Daniel I felt like I wanted to find something wrong but as I wondered around the larger photo I fell totally in love. This is very beautiful and I'm from the old school.

Great shot Daniel. I do love the comp and the illumination on the different levels from the sunlight coming thru the trees. My only nit is the yellow leaf. I do love this shot either way. :toast:
