Roan Mtn. In The Fog
by Wick Smith
Roan Mountain - NC/TN border - 6/18/11 - the rhododendron were very early bloomers this year. By the 18th, the balds had very little that were still at peak. The gardens atop Roan Mtn. were at peak. We got up early for a sunrise shot from the deck at the gardens, but had this fog instead. This was shot just as the sun was supposed to come up. It was a great scene, as this image only shows about 20% of the field of rhododendrons in this open area. As always, the larger version has more detail.
Canon 5dII, TS-E 24mm, 1/4 sec, f16, ISO 640 (wind was blowing)
Thanks to Jerry Greer for a great tour!

9 commentsI think of cropping maybe half of the sky and just a bit at the right, that might help me to concentrate on the bloom as main point of interest for me.

Hey, I forgot to tell you. I almost lost any eye to that warbler after you left! He wanted to know where I was hiding his competition!
What a great bloom of rhododendron. This is a little dark for my taste, but the fog adds a great element here and I think you've showcased the bloom quite nicely. If anything, I'd crop some from the left as the darker, dead areas aren't adding to the comp, IMHO. I like the solitary pine on the right occupying some blank space in the fog.
