Rifle Falls

I went to Rifle Falls (north of Rifle, CO) for the first time yesterday and was glad I did. It's gorgeous! The roar from the triple falls is amazing, and I got soaked several times from the swirling mist while shooting. It's all good though

The light area in the ULC is from the mist coming off the falls, not lens flare. I tried to selectively sharpen the FG so I didn't lose the moody feel of the mist, but don't know if I succeeded. Any more suggestions or hints?

Canon Rebel XTI, tripod, maybe a polarizer (shot some with and some without and can't recall on this one!)
10-22 mm lens
ISO 100, F29 @ 1/4 second

Never heard of this place, but it is spectacular. Can I drive my Prius there? I pass by Rifle when I visit my friends in Golden.

What a cool looking falls Angela. Looks like a perfect spot to try many different comps although I really like your presentation here. Two things I'd consider if it were mine would be to brighten it a bit and perhaps clone or crop the bright spots in the top left corner.

Looks like a really interesting falls. I'd like to see a bit more space at the top, but the hot spots on the upper left suggest that the lighting conditions wouldn't allow that.

Great comp of the falls. I was there about a month and half ago with students on a geo trip and it was roaring then too. Lots of mist!

Nice comp mof a waterfall I had not seen before! It's a great falls with good size. I might agree with increasing brightness, and maybe a little more contrast. Also, the upper left needs the small bright spots removed. Nice!

Hi Angela - this is one of the nicer compositions of Rifle Falls that I have seen. I like the mist and overall feeling of the image. I think a few tweaks could make it even stronger, as suggested by others. First, the few little white spots on the top edge pull my eye out of the frame. Second, I agree with brightening it up a bit. If you have Photoshop, you might consider getting Tony Kuyper's luminosity mask actions. They can give you fine control in adjusting different tones in an image. I have had success in using this technique to selectively brighten mist and you could also use them to brighten the lighter tones in the image while maintaining the darner tones as is.

Tony - this is a state park with easy accessibility.

Very nice image, and the light mist area is fine, but the bright spots on the edge of the frame really catch my eye, and (depending on your ethics) go away by crop, clone, or content fill. Normally I'd say crop, but then I think the top edge would be a bit to close to the top of the center fall.

Angela,

Lovely image of these falls; well composed and I think you made a great choice with the format/crop to really make a cohesive composition.

Agree with the others about the suggestions, especially cloning/cropping the very top bright patches. Minor, but one of those little things that I think makes a big difference in image presentation in general. I like how the diffused lighting has allowed you to capture a nice exposure on the falls without blowing anything out. A couple of tweaks as suggested and you'll have an even better image.

Angela, I have never seen the falls look this good. But, it has been too many years to count since I last saw them! IMHO the image needs a bit of brightening. At least on my monitor it seems to be low contrast, almost flat, but that is a minor thing. Have you looked at cropping out the tree on the left. I moved around as best as I could the larger image and liked having the tree out of the photo. Thanks for sharing and refreshing memories.
