Inner Momo

I've visited this canyon several times over the years and have found it difficult to get an image that I wanted to work on once I get home. This year, however, I hiked it after a week photographing with three fine gentleman: Bill Pelzmann (from NPN), Momo Vuyisich (formerly from NPN), and Bob Diniro (hiker/explorer/researcher). It was a great week with Bill's geology lessons, Bob's enthusiasm, and Momo's organization. Bill and Momo tend to shoot more wide angle images than me, and we all come away with different comps in the same light.

In my previous forays into this canyon I focused on tighter comps, but as I was looking about this chamber-like space on this day, I started to ask myself, "What would Momo do?" After spending a week looking at his LCD, I knew exactly what he would do. I set my lens as wide as it would go and moved into the scene. While I generally prefer looking to find more telephoto images, I'll readily admit that it was fun discovering my "inner Momo" and finding a comp using the shorter end of my lens.

Your thoughts and recommendations regarding this image would as always be appreciated.

5D2, 28-300 @ 28mm, f/16, 1.6 sec.

Lon, in the print, the dark area has a bit more texture. I actually didn't do much to this area because I've often thought my prints lack a strong dark "foundation" and I was actually glad to have one in this image that seemed to work. However, it's easy to add a bit more light to this and I will consider doing so. Thanks for the suggestion.

Hey Tony, I really like this, the colors, light, and textures are great the the processing is perfect. After reading your description I think I need to find my inner tony though. I tend to always go wider, I am sure for this shot I would of moved further forward and taken out a 17mm lens to exaggerate the water and the leading lines from the near walls. I might of even dropped lower to really use the river. I guess I should put the 17mm away once in a while :)

Tony,

And all this time I thought "Momo" was a place.... "Momo's Brain" Isn't that one of your images? Must be a good friend for all these tributes.... And it certainly is paying off as this is quite beautiful. The comp is wonderful and that must be about the best s-curve I can remember seeing. The colors though and of course your processing here is tops. I'm sure you spent some great care in treating this one and the results are excellent. I'm wondering what your thoughts are though on the dark area up top. To me, it's large enough that perhaps warrants a little more detail? Curious to here you thoughts there. Otherwise, a greatly crafted "wide angle" image that I think you can be proud of. I know I love it.

Obviously, the photo is a winner by any standards. It's funny, I tend to reach for whatever focal length is the opposite of what "makes sense". In wide open landscapes, I'm often wishing I had something longer than 200mm to work with, but when working in tight to my subject and in confined spaces, I love a wide angle just like this.

PS - I actually like the way the "S" stream is just an amazing component to the photo without overwhelming the foreground.

Tony - this is wonderful. Although I reside in beautiful SW Alberta now (just above Glacier National Park in MT), I grew up in Arizona and often find myself longing for the wildness of the dessert and the magic of the southwest's many canyons. I photographed a few of the slot canyons in the mid-90's, but haven't returned since, and this image is compelling me to change that ASAP.

Wonderful perspective, outstanding techs, incredible processing. I'd like to provide some kind of constructive comments but what is there to say? The golden wall is breathtaking, and your (presumed) tweaks to the contrast, etc. has just made the texture and light come alive.

Beautiful.

Really beautiful photo Tony. I love the colors and the the stream meandering through the shot. You should give the wider end more of a go especially in confined spaces. One day you may even find yourself at 24mm.

The walls of the canyon seem to be alive here Tony. I remember your Momo's brain image since way back when, snce it is probably one of the first I saw on NPN. The "S" curve, detail, and light are magnificent.

Tony, my first thought looking at your outstanding image was how interestingly the waves of the river are repeated by the shapes of the rocks. This brings into my mind the interplay of water and rocks that has been forming the canyon for such a long time. My attention is mainly drawn to the golden area in the upper part, and then by the delicate blue shades into the depth, just giving me a hint that there is still something behind. It is a great pleasure for me to explore this dynamic composition.

This one really is surprisingly "wide" for you, Tony. It's cool to see that you can easily pull off shots like this one too. Great comp, and control of exposure.

Nice...Excellent exposure and great details. I noticed the canyon is a bit reddish than I remember but it could be different lighting conditions. I took a shot from exact same spot earlier this year when we took my son on his 13th birthday trip. I did not have explore much, but this is excellent canyon that I would like to visit on my own under the right light conditions. From what I remember the composition are pretty challenging in this place.

It must be a thrill to have so much texture and line that flows to choose from, all in one location. It also has to boggle the creative juices, but you've done well to pull it together in one motion filled image. I really like how the various lighter tones add dimension as well. But the lack of like sharpness on the right fg rock bothers me. It slows all that motion, puts the brakes on a bit. Maybe a tad more sharpening there? I know, I'm asking a lot from an image I probably wouldn't know how to approach until after at least a dozen tries.

Tony, what a treat this image is! I know what you mean about the temptation to go for tight comps in a situation like this, but man am I glad you went wide here. That leading S curve into the frame to that beautiful light is fantastic. IMHO, this is one of your better canyon shots and that is saying a lot. I would hang this up my friend.

Spectacular work Tony! The composition is stunning. It's funny, this doesn't look like a classic wide angle view. It still feels tight and intimate like a slot canyon should. That s-curve in the stream is perfect and the light is pure magic.

Hi Tony - There is so much to appreciate in this image and I like the story a lot. Even though I have never met you, I have at times thought that I should try to channel my inner Tony since I tend to over-use my wide angle lens and appreciate your skills in extracting compelling elements from a larger scene. Back to the image... The s-curve is perfect - not too dominate, but present as a nice leading line. The light is spectacular and I really like the composition. Beautiful!

I love that s-curve that leads me toward the warm light at the top. The converging lines from the canyon side walls are another strong element and present an interesting tension with the vertical strata running down the center.

As many have mentioned - this is quite a surprising image. You have been so consistent with releasing "intimate" shots of sandstone structures, so that such a wide view looks so "un-typical". Irrespective of this - the blue/yellow/red combo, especially in the bg, is what qualifies this still as a Kuyper image. As usual, excellent work with light and colors to create interest and depth.

I love the winding creek through this scene. Tighter comps leave you studying and guessing scale but this makes me want to explore and see whats around the bend.

Fantastic Tony--love the comp here with the S curve and great light and depth! Glad you got to hang with my buds Momo and Bill too. The bg wall loooks a tiny bit OOF or soft to me, not sure if tho, could be my monitor or just the image size. It looks like the very near walls are IF, and it the focus were there, you might have missed the extreme back at f/16--with this scene either a hyperfocus or image blend would be necessary at f/16--especially with a tele zoom--pretty sure anyways

I always enjoy well-made slot canyon photographs. However, a lot of them are all about the place once you are in there. This one seems different. I find that its more about the journey here, because the picture is leading me (drawing me in so to speak) to a place of fantasy.

Really well done Tony.
