Eastern Kingbird Landing

After having returned from shooting in Yellowstone (mostly mammals) with Ken Archer and the Coastal Camera Club, I had a couple of free hours before my flight home earlier this week. I spent them at some ponds on the way to the airport at Bozeman, MT. There were a pair of kingbirds hunting from cattails. I would prefocus on the perch they were leaving from and when they returned fire off a round. This was my favorite image, I wish I had had more time with them but I had to catch my flight. It's cropped to vertical from horizontal. The light was kind of coming from behind and the side so there was no way to get detail in the tail band.

A great image Nate. Nice detail in the kingbird, and a wonderful job on the BG and handling the light.

Awesome shot! I love the spread out wings and tail! Great detail in the feathers, and you even have a catchlight in his eye! I also really like the background colours.

I like this landing shot, Nate. The back lighting has created a pleasant translucent effect to the wing and tail.

Nate: This is beautiful. The light and mood is very pleasing, sharpness is incredible, but it's the expression in his face and the capture just a moment from grasping his perch that really add drama to the image. I guess in a perfect world he might have come in at just a slightly different angle to show off his right wing a little more and separate it from his face better, but that's a pretty minor nit on another great capture.

The backlighting on the sharply defined wings really make this shot, Nate. The pose that you captured with wings and tail spread emphasizes that light advantage beautifully.

Great image, Nate. I actually like the bright tail band and also the bright back margins of the wings, but I'm not a purist.. Excellent detail & background.

Very nice Nate. Super sharp and a great BG. About as well exposed as you could do with the light.

Nice prefocus approach to get them from the cattails, I like the wing spread and the way the light comes through and the background really adds to image, way to go.
