I suppose many of you who visit Bosque are used to scenes like this. However, I've never been there, and this was a different type of setting than I'm used to seeing in Yellowstone.
As I drove south one morning, I ran into some thick haze near Norris Geyser Basin and started hoping there might be a similar layer of fog down in Hayden Valley. I was in luck, but the fog was so thick that any hope of a dramatic golden sunrise was dashed. Thankfully, some sandhill cranes were grouped near the road, waking up and preening as things slowly started to clear up. I watched and shot them for at least a half hour before they finally started moving. At last they took to the air, flying over the Yellowstone River (thus the reflection) and disappearing into the gray murk.
Not any color or much contrast to speak of, but it was a new park experience, so I was pleased.

16 commentsI think this could look even better by adding canvas and presenting it in landscape.
The mood this sets is a rare one. The reflections add a nice touch to the image.
I'll agree with the others with adding canvas to the left side for just a little more spce in front, and cloning out the pesky spots.
Aside from those minor nits, a wonderful image I'd love to have myself!!
As far as the crop choice, I knew this wouldn't be everyone's cup of tea. There are a few shots in the sequence where I could have gone either way. In this case I chose to focus on the vertical because the reflection is so strong. I don't think a chunk of dark smudge in the water would have helped an otherwise clean horizontal canvas (to me it would have been distracting and would have thrown off the balance), so I decided to focus on the shapes staggered vertically in this composition.
There are definitely other images from the sequences that are more appropriate for a horizontal canvas. Perhaps I'll post a couple down the road.
