Something I could never have done with the D200 due to noise at high ISO's.. The noise level at 2000+iso on the D7000 is quite good. This is my first attempt. Not right yet but there are possibilities.
D7000 ISO 2500
3200th second @f9
Contrast down 2 bars
ev+2 stops manual focus Programme manual.
Large crop. levels /czm sharpening Neat image 1 pass

Wonderful action. A tad soft. I don't find the noise level objectionable. Quite a fascinating shot.

Awesome image, John. The head is really sharp and you can see a lot of detail in the insect. Congrats.

Image hold up nicely despite the crop and ISO. Wonderful color and catchlight. After going to the bird, my eye tends to look for the perch. Wonderful image.

This is a terrific shot John, it's plenty detailed enough for me and I love the blur of the wings :^) What a perfect pose and, unless I'm very much mistaken (which I could well be!), looks to me as though that's not one insect but two the Redstart caught in it's beak; perhaps they were mating ... what a way to go ;^p

Thanks all.
When you think back,- its not so long ago that if we got 400 ASA on film we thought it wonderful- and with grain like gravel too !!
How things have changed.

Terrific action you captured. Noise not noticeable throughout most of the image. Love the eye contact, wing position and blur, positions of feet, and insects.

A shot unimaginable until recently without flash . Beautiful capture, with the added value of the prey in its beak

Excellent shot!!! Great timing and I really like that we can see the motion in the wings. Well done.
