Hi Folks,

Here's a young lady (or so I think) who had hoped to sneak away quietly as I was photographing birds nearby. Glad I caught her out of the corner of my eye. Shot May 5th at Crane Creek State Park, Ohio.

Nikon D2X, 300mm f2.8 w/ TC-14E; 1/500s, f5, ISO 200. Minor processing in CS2. About 85% of ff.

Your comments and critiquest are welcome.

A real smile-inducer you've captured here Julie :^) Closest I've come to shooting something like this while out looking for birds is a boring old Squirrel - LOL ;^)

I love the composition created by your choice of crop and the way the trunk lies at a bit of an incline. The detail in the young lady's hair is superb, as is the extremely shallow DOF. The only thing I can possibly think of that might make this image "pop" just a tiny bit more is perhaps a little (more?) brightening of the subject's beautiful brown eyes.

All in all, very well done and thanks for sharing :^)

I love raccoons and this is a sweet shot! I like the inquisitive yet shy pose and the framing...though I might have gone for a tad more "stump" on the LHS and a bit less on the RHS for more compositional balance.

she looks so sweet and serious. Nice capture. She stands out well against the bg even with it being bright and colorful. (not too bright or too colorful) Nicely done

You have very nice detail (and catchlights!) in the face. Pleasing. I am not sure where you made the slight crop, but if possible I would think it would be an enhancement to have the face a bit lower in the frame and maybe take of thin slice off the bottom. Exposure with subject against the broken sky background is always difficult, and you seem to have managed that perfectly. Thanks for sharing this very cute subject.

Hi All,

I forgot to mention that I used fill flash (at -2 2/3 ev) on this shot. That helps explain why she is not underexposed with the bright sky in the bg. Other shots I took where the flash failed to fire have her much darker in the image. Also, I did a little dodging around her eyes and mask to brighten them and burning of the sky to darken it slightly.

And thanks for the compliments!

Nice use of f/5 in your portrait, sharp details in that rather cute/shy face
