D300, 500mm f/4 + 1.7x tc, 1/800 s, f/6.7, ISO 320. Tripod. Full Frame, late afternoon light. Photo taken on July 21, 2010 at a small pool on the sound side of Opal Beach in Pensacola, FL. There is no real cover to use as a blind, but I've had good luck just sitting near a clump of grass and waiting for the feeding birds to work their way within camera range.
Comments and suggestions most welcome.

Nice little bird in a good pose. Bright eye, nice feather detail and colours.
There is an odd vertical line right between the feet - ? a twig?

Sandy:
It's a rare Florida Sequoia.
Illegal to remove, even from a photograph.

Wow, this is very nice. The light is wonderful and your focus/dof is perfect. Sandy has a good eye. I looked again after reading her comment and I see it to. It looks like a tiny twig that is closer than the focus plane. IMO, worth cloning out. Lovely image. :toast:

David, I am so jealous of all the shorebirds you have down in Florida. Love the light and perfect angle. The smooth ocean BG really helps it to pop off the page.

This is great - Sequoia or no Sequoia!

I saw my first ones up here the other day, but they were too far away!

I like the late light and warm color here David, great low POV & BG separation..
Wish I could get down to the Gulf at least once a year, but never can seem to get away :frown:
Well done & have great holiday weekend - Be safe :toast:

Good soft light David. I especially like the light on the legs. Works well with a gentle looking bird. FWIW, overall the smaller image seems a bit dark to me, but the larger one does not. But then, the toned down light may create the very mood you are aiming for.

Exceptional light, it adds a lot of warmth giving this a peaceful feel. A clump of grass, huh? Sometimes it doesn't take much to make birds comfortable with your presence.
