Furnace
by Colin H Sillerud
Hello everyone! I have watched NPN for a while now, but this is my first post. I figured I'd start off with an older one, but still one of my favorites. It is the product of a wild adventure the story of which can be read here: http://colinhs.wordpress.com/2009/12/02/furnace/
Thanks for viewing and I look forward to being a part of this great community!

composition is great and the colors stunning.
Welcome to NPN and the Landscape/ESS Gallery. What a grand entrance! This is simply a beautiful image. I wouldn't change a thing and can't find anything to suggest to change or critique. Oh, will start you off by giving you a bad time and asking, Why didn't you wait until the light was better and fully on the rock?
Just awesome. Now you have set a high standard for yourself. Welcome aboard and we look forward to your images and participation.

Joseph, I actually shot the moon at 50mm and the rest at 29mm so it is larger, but the light changed to fast that I could not change to a longer lens to further accentuate the moon's size. I also felt that the Rock itself was the focal point and didn't want a too large moon to distract. As for the 4x5 crop suggestion, I feel that the line of volcanic ridge on the left is one of the key elements leading the eye through the photo so I have to disagree about that.
Marc, great to be here! Took me a while, but I finally found the time. I agree with you that there is some slight haloing, but it is not the result of a blend as the foreground is a single exposure. I think the illusion is created by the ground reaching a steeper angle at that point and holding more snow, which lightens it coincidentally in line with the black rock. Do you think I should work to subdue that transition or leave it as it naturally was?
Tony, thanks! I will put up the website link asap! Hope things are going well for you.
Sorry I did not hook up with you in your neck of the woods, just ran out of time! See you this fall
this is awesome
i like the composition
Shiprock in winter, very unusual. Everything about this works IMO. I see no problems or haloing... Look forward to seeing more of your work.
I don't see a halo, it's just imaginary because of the bright snow in that part of the photograph.
