Tucked Away

This is from a recent trip to a fairly remote stretch of the Oregon coast. I'm still learning to blend, and I would love to know the basics of how some of you folks do your blending. I spent a lot of time working on the selections around the sea stacks, and I'm curious if others have a fast way to do that...

I appreciate any feedback and suggestions.

Very nice. Lovely colour palette. The processing is appropriately dark.

nice scene, well processed. i'd reduce the size of the signature if possible!! there are some master blenders here, so i'll leave them to add their comments/advice.

This is really nice Jesse. I love the reflected color in the stream and the centered comp - works very nicely in this instance.

I love the leading lines and textured foreground with smooth water. The stacks line up well and the sky works just right to be believable. Awesome stuff indeed.

I could teach you every blending method in the book, and I teach through Skype, but obviously I charge!

I really like this Jesse. The colors, the comp... I also like the down the middle foreground line. Nice job. The blend looks pretty good here.

I really like the comp here Jesse with the stream leading the eye into the scene. Colors look great, especially the reflected light on the water. Your blending looks good to me at this small size, but it's hard to evaluate without seeing a larger version. I'm also learning different blending techniques, but I'm mostly just blending by hand for now.

Jesse,

Beautiful sunset. A classic setup with the lead-in line of the fresh water channel leading the viewer in to the scene. I don't mind the blackness so much in the stacks/rocks as they seem to do fine as shapes and forms rather than requiring detail; it's a silhouette after all. Lovely coastal sunset.

The blend looks good to me! I would agree with the others that the stacks look good in shadow. As far as blending goes, it looks like you might have to experiment or pay for the best advice. Steve Sierren was going to discuss some of his blending techniques, you may want to check his website. Tony Kuyper has used Luminosity masks and demonstrates on his website how you might try using them to blend exposures. Personally, if I need to blend exposures, it is currently done by hand. I would like to try some of the other methods, but I have not put in the time yet. In general, I stack different exposures and use the eraser tool to reveal an area of a chosen exposure. Use of the selection tools may be needed to fine tune the process. My blends are usually not very complex, some of the others are much more involved. A couple of hours with Mark on Skype may be worth many hours of frustration and less than perfect blends. I have found using a grad ND filter, hard edge and gently moving it during the longer exposures a very good method of avoiding difficult sky-mountain blends, as it removes the hard transition of the filter.

This is definitely beautiful. I like the inlet stream in the foreground. Despite the blend the foreground and sea stacks are still pretty dark. I would try to bring a little more detail out if you could (but not too much). I am not very experienced with blending but NPN member Sean Bagshaw has a tutorial on exposure blending that might be helpful. I have purchased some of his tutorials and am currently working my way through them. I find them to be very informative.

This is a beautiful beach sunset too. Nicely composed. The only thing I might adjust is the intensity of blue in the line of surf.

Nice shot, the blend looks very natural to me, at least at this size. I would tone down the intensity of the blues at the surf as Chris mentioned, however. Really like the chosen comp here with that great leading line.

This is really beautiful, Jesse! I would have like to see a little more detail in the rocks...but the darkness gives it mood too...so it's a toss up.
For me...most of the time, I just get away with doing a Ctrl+Alt+2...selecting highlights (or hitting invert to select shadows), then paste it into the second exposure. Pretty basic, but it usually gets the job done.

Wonderful Jesse! Love the sky color and reflections. I'd say your blending is coming along very nicely. A lot of it comes down to finding the right method for creating and refining selections. In the case of this image I think that luminosity mask selections could be very effective. I have also been having a lot of success with the Edge Detection option under Refine Selection/Mask in PS CS5.
