Painted Sunset

Friend and NPN member Paul Marcellini is up in the PNW so he and I decided we might as well take a quick trip out to the John Day Fossil Beds. We had a lot of not-so-interesting light, and then a little bit of this light, to make it worth the wait, I suppose.

1/4 sec, f/13, ISO 200. 16mm

Comments and critique appreciated as always. Thanks for looking.

I also just recently put up new galleries on my website. Feel free to take a look and let me know what you think!

I love the drama here and the general atmosphere
I noticed there are some sensor dusts in the sky

Beautiful light in this Alex, and a lovely scene. There are a couple of dust bunnies in the sky though.

I really love the drama and the comp here Alex. The lines in the grass create a great flow through the image all the way back to the spotlit buttes. I also think you did a great job PPing this image-love the darker mood.

This looks beautiful Alex. Interesting from foreground to mid and back in the sky. I'm not sure if it is just me on this crappy work monitor, but it looks like you have a couple of dust spots in the sky.

Very nice shot, and a little different than what I'm used to seeing from the Painted Hills. I like how you gave the foreground, hills, and sky about an equal role in the composition . . . it works well.

I'm glad you guys made the run down there, that is a sweet sky! Great s-curve through the hills and the foreground grass is a compliment to the scene.

I just had a look at your new work galleries page... anything from the Gorge this week coming???

Lots of drama throughout the image. Fantastic sky and light on the distant hills. I wouldn't change a thing other than the sky dust already mentioned. :toast:

That's some pretty epic light man! I love the darkness in this one, and the leading lines of the grasses. The light on the distant mountains adds a lot for me too.

Thank you all for the comments so far. I don't know why sensor dust spots always elude me like this. Reposted!

Justin, yeah! I'll definitely be putting up some photos from the gorge in the next week or two. It was nice finally meeting up.

The grasses in the foreground are what make this scene so compelling. And that side lighting!
Simply beautiful Alex, without one bit of wasted space.

That light would make it all worth while. Schweeeet. The eye wants to follow the bushes out of the frame but the curve back of the painted hills brings it back in. Close but think it works. Nice job :)
