My first photo of a Black and White Warbler - this came while I was waiting for the perfect Eastern Kingbird shot. The bird landed 20 feet from me and posed for a couple seconds before disappearing.

Nikon D300s 300 f4 + 1.7X TC HH
f/8
1/1600s
ISO 800
-1 EC

Cropped to 60%, smart sharpen, very minor clone job, all in CS5 on 27" iMac

Nice catch Luke, certainly a tough one to get to sit still for a photo. Bit contrasty, some fill-flash would help even things out and also help with an exposure on a bird like this.

Thanks for introducing a new warbler to me. A difficult but treasured catch.

Good pose on a neat species. I like the sky colors in the background. The dark thick limb is pretty overwhelming unfortunately, really needs some fill flash as Terry mentioned.

I agree with Terry's and Gary's critique Luke. A nice species with a great BG. The lighting was tough and the big branch overwhelms the little bird only because it is shadowed and so dark. If it would have been lit, I think this image would have worked better.

Congrats on your first shot of the species Luke. I like the background and exposure on the bird looks good but those shadows were tough to deal with.

The light might have been a bit unfortunate but the bird is a great catch. Nicely done

A really neat looking bird that I had the pleasure of seeing for the first time last week at Great Swamp NWR, NJ. I like the pose and the BG - ditto the previously mentioned nits.

Luke, I agree with Terry's suggestion next time, but still you always have to love it when you get a capture of a species you have never had before. I don't think I have ever even seen a photo of one of these on NPN before. Congrats!

Great to get him standing still but the lighting was unfortunate. Cool stormy effect though

Good comp, detail, and the POV works for me.
The light could be better of course, but you've managed it well.
That's the thing about these warblers..I've spotted new ones in close and had one chance, then they're gone.
Just this morning I spotted a Magnolia Warbler, got nothing but a blurry butt shot as it turned to go
