Loch Shiel Scotland

by Graham Brown

Gallery: Man & NaturePosted May 15, 2011285 views19 comments
This was taken at Glenfinnan, Scotland and shows the Glenfinnan Monument, erected as a tribute to the clansmen who fought in the Jacobite rising when Bonnie Prince Charles fought for the British Throne in the name of his father James Stewart. The monument lies on the shore of Loch Shiel where the Clansmen landed.

Canon 5D, Sigma 24-105mm, 5 secs at f18 and iso 100. The image was taken just before sunrise and is 2 images stitched together to form a panorama

Lovely, lovely light! There is everything to like and nothing to be picky about. I would not only hang this on my wall, I would paper my walls with it! Not to be gushy.

What a superb image Graham. It imparts a very special mood that is quite mellow. It looks like a place you'd want to stay for some time. The composition is well handled and the palette of colors is very warm and intoxicating. It reminds me of the style of American painter Maxfield Parrish with the dramatic landscape and the warm lighting of early or late in the day. It he had a camera, this is the kind of image he would capture. Nice effort.

Very nice Graham, but the saturation is unrealistic and overdone IMHO.

Gorgeous scene and composition. Maybe back off the saturation just a tad.

Wow an amazing scene! Love the view, the colors, the pano format. Looks like a neat place for a Whiskey-Distillery too

This is a beautiful scene......it's a bit over saturated for my taste

I have reduced the saturation in line with your comments but for me the original is still real to life. This was taken just before sunrise when the sky over the left sided mountains had a beautiful red glow which lit up the autumn colours in the valley but unfortunately this only lasted for about 5 minutes. However I understand your comments and hope the repost looks more realistic. Graham

The light is what works for me Graham. The grand color gives this a very painterly effect.

Good heavens this is a pretty capture. I especially like the light on the right side of the frame and the touch of mist is a plus.

To me it looks as if there is some sort of smudge in the top middle of the sky, almost as if some cloning has happened. I have no idea how this was processed but it also looks as if there might be some uneven dodging on the island trees.

I think you have the capture for a real winner here.

Lovely scene here. I like the repost a bit better. For anyone who hasn't seen places like this where the fall color is intense on the ground cover, bushes, etc. it may seem unreal. Per prior comment there are some strange circular color patterns in the upper center of the frame.

Richard and Dan, Thanks for your comments. I can see what you mean when I enlarge the image but I have not done any processing other than curves so I think these effects may be due to the stitching process and I will try to blend them in. Thanks Graham

Beautiful shot. I prefer the rework as well. I personally love highly saturated images. Over time I have learned that less is often more. Gorgeous shot!
