WC 482 - Kansas? Really?

Some would consider this whole scene to be decidedly out of place :). Rock formations, in flatter than a pancake Kansas? This is Monument Rocks, in western Kansas, lit by the setting sun and topped with cloud cover. The cloud cover stayed all night :(, blocking the full moon. Cropped from a 19 image panorama.

Nice pano, Rob--the rocks stand out great against the dark sky!

Kansas, eh? Wouldn't have guessed it! The light is great - especially with that deep blue sky. Beautiful shot. I love the pano.

Nice photo Rob!
The way you've used the dark clouds to accent and brighten the rocks is great!

Thanks for the comments. Avi, I understand your needing to see this in broader context if you aren't familiar with Kansas. There is a view from the closest highway to here that I haven't stopped to photograph yet, that demonstrates how flat it is. Monument Rocks is probably 5-6 miles from the highway, as the crow flies, and are easily seen from the highway, rising from the prairie. Take a look at this old article, http://improbable.com/airchives/paperair/volume9/v9i3/kansas.html , for a perspective on how Kansas really is flatter than a pancake :).

Wonderful lighting and well captured. The pano format definately works for the subject. Thanks for the geography lesson too.

The lighting is fabulous. Sorry the clouds hid the moon later, but they really make this image sing with the contrast between the sunlit formations and dark clouds.
