Creep

This was my first relatively close winter encounter with a fox, shot in Yellowstone on New Year's Day. Not the most handsome example of a fox sporting a poofy winter coat, but I was simply pleased to get a close-up view. Though the sun eventually came out later in the day, at this point in the morning it was still overcast with low visibility, which led to a bit of blurring in the feet.

I'm normally a "leave room in front of the horizontally-facing subject" type guy, as are others here, but in this case the symmetry of the body, tail and head made me lean toward a slightly tighter crop to emphasize the shape of the subject in profile.

On a side note, immediately after this fellow ran off, my Gitzo tripod leg cracked and popped out. At least it went down in the line of duty...

Great pose. The detail in the larger version is wonderful.

Great image, Max. I've yet to get close to a fox and envy those of you that have and had your cameras ready when you did. I like your comp but I think I would favor more room to the right. Too bad the feet show some blurring. Was this really at 1/1000?

Keith, the title is a bit misleading. The fox was trotting at a fairly brisk pace. The pose does make it seem like it's stalking prey, but it was actually jogging through the snow.

I completely understand and agree with your rationale in leaving equal space in front and behind. Actually nothing wrong with the appearance of the fox, decent coat. Too bad he didn't open his eyes a bit more for you. Pleasing fox image!!! :toast:

The coat might not be that fluffy but he has got "wily" written all over him. The hind paws convey the motion and his face is full of intent.

Very nice Max; I like the fact that this specimen has such a mixed coat, it adds interest IMO. I understand your reasoning for placing the subject in the middle of the frame and it does work well. Yet I think with more space in front it would also work.

Nice job capturing this guy up close. I love these red fox in snow images. Its probably not the prettiest specimen, but it definitely conveys the struggles these creatures must have to endure in their Wyoming environment. I too am in the more room on the right camp. Shame about the Gitzo!

love the way the fox "pops" from the snow Max, and the blurred feet are a nice touch in my book...some space in front would have been a slight improvement, but it works well as presented too

Sweet photo Max, the harsh winter conditions seem to reflect in his body language. I like this comp.

Gorgeous. I don't mind the slight blurring in the feet and tail. Cropping seems just right.
