Heaven's Gate

Above the clouds at sunrise on Haleakala, Maui,Hawaii at "Heaven's Gate". At least that was my impression at the time (Film Image 1985). A long drive to the top (starting at 2:30 AM local time), above 10,000 feet with below freezing temps (which I knew before leaving NJ in June 1985) ...... but well worth the trip. The silhouette in the foreground is a cinder cone.

The only other time I was above the clouds, was in the early '70's in the White Mountains of NH when I stayed at Lake of the Clouds AMC hut.

Each time, an existential experience (BTW - Plane rides don't count....).

Bronica ETR Medium Format
Ektachrome Professional 100
Flatbed scan Epson V750 with SilverFast Ai software.

Thanks for looking and for your comments and critiques which are always appreciated.

So beautiful, Eva. Wish the sun was a little more off center but that's minor.

very good eva - the most eye-catching of these older trannies that you're digging out.

Nothing like being above the clouds for a unique perspective. Wonderful color, clouds and cinder cone really add to this sunrise plus that it is in Maui, way to go.

What an extraordinary view. The silhouetted volcano works nicely in the composition here because it really places the viewer's attention on the clouds and the extraordinary color in the sky. It also provides wonderful contrast for those foreground clouds.

Nice, cinde cone balances well. Transition of tones from the top to middle is pleasing. I see (Subjectively) a bit too much of the black at the bottom.

Very nice Eva, I like the dark mountain silhouette, and the various layers of clouds. Great colors as well. Really gives you a sense of flying. Great stuff.

What an exquisite image, Eva. I love the light and how it is rendering the clouds. A beautiful composition too.

What a great thing to see the tops of the clouds when your feet are on solid ground.
Great scan -- the brightness of the Sun really comes through, as well as the details in the clouds.

Wow, great stuff! You were a good photographer then too. I've been there, done that. Experienced the Haleakala Sunrise, that is.
