Cades Cove Oak

A morning with fog and sunlight in Cades Cove or even Cataloochee Cove in the Great Smoky Mountains is like heaven. The first time I found this scene it was a gray-overcast day. Although the old oak tree was just as majestic in the cove against the mountains, it did not stand out as it did in the foggy sunlight. On my next stop, this is what I found.

Nikon D700, 70-200 mm, f13, 1/30 sec. ISO 200

Comments very much appreciated.

Sublime. I have no doubt the overall view was wonderful, however your choice of composition made a wonderful view, exception and special. Just great work Tom. :jump:

Beautiful scene! I love this kind of "country" composition. It certainly doesn't bother me, but I do wonder what it would look like without the shaded foreground too.

Nice scene Tom  I agree with Chris, I would crop out the dark bottom section if it were my image IMO.

This is wonderful Tom! The fog and sunlight look great. I also like your composition very much. As mentioned I could see this without the shadow across the bottom, but still like it as is. The larger version is especially nice! Good work Tom. Hope your trip was really nice, if this is any example looks like you did well.

Good call Tom. What a gorgeous Oak.
Fog sometimes makes everything better imo.
Wonderful lighting

The fog works wonders here. Could maybe see burning down the URC just a bit.

What a wonderful mood with the mist like that! I do think the shadow in the foreground detracts a bit, though a crop puts the tree a little too close to the edge.

Lovely shot Tom. I'm especially attracted to the BG sun dappled hills - beautiful shot!

great lighting and love the lighting on the bg, giving just a hint of what's back there.
