Firstly I must thank Ajit Huilgol who let me know about this sanctuary and Oliver Goetzl and Ivo Nornberger of Gulo Film Productions who allowed me to use their vehicle to sit in. Having seen rushes from the documentary they are making about Sloth Bears the finished product will be remarkable. I hope it comes out soon!

Taken in Daroji Sloth Bear Sanctuary, Karnataka, India, 2nd April 2011.

EOS 1D MkIV

500mm F4 IS hand-held from vehicle

F6.3, ISO 800, 1/400

I feel this is a well composed photo. Good sharpness on the bear as it appears to be moving somewhat towards the camera. These are very interesting bears IMHO, glad you had a chance to see and photograph them. Thanks for sharing.

They're strange bears and not easy to find in the wild - this is the best place in the world to photograph them. I like the light here and you managed to keep enough detail in that black fur. The hind leg is up, and I prefer to have one of the front legs up which looks much more natural and better indicates forward movement.

Edited to add: although I very much like the vegetation in the background, I do feel it overpowers the subject; I basically see the vegetation first, then I see the subject. Hope that makes sense.

Hi Ken,

I like almost everything about this image except the eye-grabbing nature of the yellow vegetation that dominates the frame. Exposure on the bear looks very good, the expression of the bear works for me, I like how the bear appears to be in a "semi" crouch, and I like that the rocks the bear is on are in focus all the way to the near foreground. If the image were mine I would tone down the yellow vegetation significantly...

Cheers...thanks for sharing this shot...and the information about the sanctuary...

Ken, I think it's framed nicely. While the yellow is somewhat overpowering as others have mentioned, the upward branches provide some nice texture.

Coincidentally, I'm in the initial stages of working on a project with Oliver and Ivo. Glad to hear they're nice guys.

A funny looking animal for sure - I like the detail in the fur and how the back foot is slightly off the ground

Thanks for all of your comments, when I first looked at this I knew that the bright yellow foliage would be a problem, but I did not mind as the Bear looked OK to me and that is what I wanted. The yellow has been exagerated in conversion for the forum but whatever it is still bright!

Does anybody have any suggestions as to how I can reduce this?

I have some more to post later.

what a remarkable subject and a great capture! I do agree that toning down the yellows would make the bear stand out stronger.

Ken, so good to see someone taking the trouble to make a trip to Daroji. It is heartening to see this image. I still remember vividly the past decade where the Karnataka Forest Department worked overtime to ensure that this Bear Sanctuary would consolidate into the habitat it is today. Glad to be a part of the team which restored this habitat.

Wonderful image of the sloth bear in motion. The facial detail and that of the claws really brings this to life. Agree on the yellows comments, but a fine image.

Like the angle of the bear coming towards you Ken. Also like the rocky foundation and the piece behind the bear. Dealing with the yellow would seem to be a simple matter of knocking down the saturation and/or brightness of the yellow channel.
