Clouds Over Alabamas

I made a trip to the Alabama Hills a couple months ago hoping to come back with a decent black and white image. I hadn't been there in two years even though I live only an hour away!
I was hoping the approaching winter storm wouldn't cloud up completely before I could find something worthy.

My wife and I wound up here in this area for the afternoon and into sunset. It's near one of the better known arches, but I can't remember what it's name was. We'd never been to this area before so we set off to see what we could find. After shooting a few things here and there and not quite producing anything that created a spark. I turned around and noticed these rather cool looking rocks. Where did those come from? ;)

I had finally found a creative spark with these formations and set about trying different povs and FLs. I settled on this one during post work-up.

This is a two image blend one for sky and the other for the ground/rocks. Late afternoon lighting from the setting sun to the west over the crest.

There is a lot to like in this image. The clouds, the angle and texture of the rocks. Well done B&W image.

Great bw conversion! Love the Alabama hills - unending variety. As a suggestion - maybe try pushing the contrast in the upper tones a bit more.

Looks nice, well composed. The clouds mimic the rocks- large to small from left to right. Possibly try just a slight increase in brightness and contrast.

thanks for the responses and suggestions thus far. I agree it needs a little brightening so I've included that here. I saw that after I posted it last night. DOHH!

very nice, Cory. The cloud layers have just enough separation to see the sky. Beautiful rocks and foreground.

Real nice, Cory. The B&W makes this feel almost other-worldly.

Cory,

Very well done conversion, the bright one slightly better than the first but I like the mood and feeling of the first better. That might be the Mobius arch. There's the arch with a well marked trail to it from a flat parking area in the middle of the northern hills.

I think the repost is an improvement and I like the additional brightness and contrast. Great scene and I could spend all day in the Hills with clouds like this. Nicely done.

Very nice, Cory. Wonderful details in the rocks. I like your conversion and overall contrast. A great find I would say, which looks like great subject matter for dark and moody shots. It has a real barren and desolate feel to it.
