Channel Sunset
by Craig Myers
A weather front and fog move in beneath a golden sunset in the Santa Barbara Channel. One of the 20 drilling platforms in the channel looms through the fog on the horizon. I thought the sky with its storm-sunset contrast was a fitting metaphor for the debate over energy independence and environmental protection. On January 28, 1969, Platform A experienced "an uncontrolled blowout which lasted for eight days and which spilled 100,000 barrels of crude oil over the course of several months, impacting over forty miles of coastline. This catastrophe was the catalyst for the emergence of an active environmental movement in the Santa Barbara area, what many cite as the birth of the modern environmental movement in the United States." 3 commentsI was on hand for the Santa Barbara spill and the Exxon spill in Alaska, but thankfully missed the BP spill in the Gulf. And somehow your shot does capture the "feel" of the trade-offs between energy and environment.
