Light vs Shadow

by Joseph Balcken

Gallery: LandscapePosted April 14, 2011123 views10 comments
The clouds were swirling around so fast that the light and shadow were changing by the second. To me, it felt as though the two opposing elements were at war...hence the title. I even had to change from the 2 second timer to a remote cable because I couldn't trip the shutter fast enough to capture the light I wanted. Every frame was considerably diffrent from the others. The frosted trees on the left are covered in rime ice. It was cold, windy, and fantastic to watch.

C&C are welcome and put to use.

50D, 70-200 f4L
1/125 sec, f/11, ISO 100
3 exposures manually blended in PS CS3

Amazing capture Joseph, thought this was a black and white at first but then realized the sublte splashes of color in the large version. The rime ice covering the trees is a very nice touch. Where was this taken? :toast:

Zack, thanks for the comment. I tried a B&W conversion as well, but in the end preferred this version. This image was taken this morning at Craggy Gardens off the Blue Ridge Pkwy in Western NC.

Oh yeah, I can feel the motion and drama here. Excellent processing, especially the blend, given the motion of the clouds.

I love the mood created by the subdued lighting and the swirling clouds in this scene, Joseph. Very beautifully done. :toast:

The thumbnail definitely doesn't do this one justice. Lovely and poetic composition Joseph. The mood and atmosphere are just wonderful. Personally, I'd like to see a bit more detail in the shadows and the web presentation might be just slightly soft. Overall, a stunning capture!

Joseph, this shot is unique! I especially like how the light allows only hints at the details of the trees and rocks. Great work!

Beautiful scene and good job on the blend. I like the layers and the mystical atmosphere of the fog. A very successful image.

The range of light is gorgeous. The large view is really impressive. I'm surprised this hasn't gotten more notice.
