Vision in Red

I took this photo at the Boyce Thompson Arboretum near Superior Arizona. We don't have cardinals in the Potland Oregon area, so it is a thrill for me to see one.

D700, 80-400mm, ISO800, 400mm, 1/3200, F8 cropped about 75%

Red indeed! BTA is the best place in AZ to see cardinals IMO, but that doesn't make them easy to photograph. You did well finding one to sit out in such an open spot and such good light.

I'll be leading the birdwalk at Boyce on Saturday, by the way.

nice one, Barbara. I like the proud pose, good detail, and nice job on the reds.

Love the composition and sharpness...As a fellow Oregonian, I feel your pain with no cardinals around. :toast:

Thank you for your comments! He flew from this perch to a female and mated with her just seconds after I took this photo. I am not sure why his wings were down unless there was another male nearby. I didn't see one.
Wish I were there to go on the walk with you Rich!

A lovely cardinal Barbara, the reds look very nicely exposed, the setting is appealing as is the pose and the light in the bird's eye. I think a little room in front of the bird might make the composition stronger if you have some in the original frame. On the larger version I detect some areas where there is a fine thing halo, that can be eliminated quite easily. I feel for you about Cardinals too, I don't get to seem them here in Utah
