Hello All.
I'm a new member to NPN. I'm hoping to get better and better through this site. I went to a Mike Moats Seminar and he told me about this site.

This photo was taken while snowmobiling in Steamboat on Rabbits Ear Pass in February 2011

Nikon D300s - 18mm, ISO 250, f22, 1/20s. Manual on Tripod.

I prepared the RAW file using Lightroom an NIK with adjusting the levels, contrast, saturation etc. I did not crop the photo.

Thanks

Welcome to NPN, Cindy. This is a nice scene stretching into the distance. The over lapping trees on the left seem a bit cluttered but I don't know what you were up against out in the field.

Welcome to NPN Cindy. A very pretty scene. I do agree with David on the tree limbs on the left, but I still enjoy the mood. I think you'll find NPN a great resource for improving your photography, plus just a lot of fun.

I had trees to my left but I felt the shot would be boring if I didn't get the tree branches in the shot. Thanks for your comments. I'm looking forward to this.

Another welcome to NPN Cindy :wavey: . The scene here is very pretty and seems well worth photographing. Your think was right to include a FG element. However, the FG element here is not a particularly strong one with all those branches and creates a chaotic look. Keep in mind that you do not always need a FG object in your landscape photo, sometimes it can work better without.

Welcome to NPN, Cindy!
I like the wintry background but also agree with the others about the branches on the left being a bit distracting here. Looking forward to seeing more from you.

Hi Cindy,

Welcome to NPN and the Landscape Gallery! You've certainly come to the right place. Lots of folks here willing to help and offer their advice (or opinion!) It's a friendly and helpful group.

This is a very nice winter scene as others have mentioned. I'm sure too that the experience you had being there was in part what motivated you to capture this scene. A couple of things for me. As far as the tree goes, I understand the comments, but I will say what I always say about elements that aren't included entirely. If you're going to cut something off, do it on purpose so it doesn't seem like an accident or something you just weren't paying attention to. In other words, I like that you included enough of the tree that it tells me you wanted to included it. and for that, I don't find it distracting.

The other things would be the snow and the sky. Unfortunately it looks like you've got some flat light and that has rendered the snow at the bottom with no detail. Not much to be done about that considering the conditions. And while you've got some nice atmosphere with the clouds/fog in the background, the upper sky is rather empty which to me makes the overall composition a little out of balance. And speaking of balance, the tree onthe left makes this "heavy" on the left. You would need something like a big puffy cloud or a full moon in the upper right to balance this out a little.

Overall, still a pretty nice winter landscape.

Welcome aboard.

Lon

Welcome Cindy!

Can't help but agree, just the right half of the image alone shows elegant transitions and brances conflict.

Cindy,,,,,,,I'd like to expand a bit on my original comment. It's the combination of the vertical trunk behind the foreground branches that give a sense of clutter. It's like a big X. The horizontal branches flow into the scene nicely but that strong vertical creates a crash of lines in an otherwise peaceful image.
