Cauldron

Water and ice at Crystal Cascades, Mt. Washington, NH. My youngest son was climbing Mt. Washington this day (the home of the worst weather in the world) while I played around down below the tree line photographing these falls in subzero wind chill. There were 60 mph winds where he was so I should not complain. Feb 2010.

Make no mistake about the treachery of this mountain at a only 6288 ft even in the summer months. It does not compare to the western mountains in altitude but it is a lot worse weather wise. I climbed it twice when I was about Kevin's age in the summer months. In June there were a few hikers who almost died from hypothermia. In August we witnessed a lighting storm from above and could see the Atlantic Ocean the next day we we reached the summit. The changeable weather is treacherous and nothing short of deadly if unprepared. Crosses along the trails tell the score of those that died. After all it is the home of the highest recorded wind speeds (buildings are chained down at the summit). Kevin and I stayed at the Joe Dodge Lodge (as I did in 1972) where one can read of the morbid history of the this mountain in the library there.
If interested in this place check out some of Jim Salge's work http://www.jimsalge.com/About.html. He worked as a meteorologist at this inhospitable but most beautiful place.
Exquisite detail in the ice, set off perfectly by the soft blue water.
Exceptional image, and perfect for the WC!
Great picture of Kevin too -

wonderful submission for the "Landscape" gallery. You're certainly a dedicated
photographer to go out in such conditions.
