This is my first post. I call it Arrested Development as it was taken in Bodie, CA, a "ghost town" suspended in time in the Eastern Sierras. Taken in late afternoon with my Nikon P80 on auto. Have just ordered a D3100 and hope to learn about serious picture taking here on NPN. I really want to learn about landscape photography. Retired, live in San Diego. Would love comments and suggestions. Thanks!

First welcome to NPN. This is a great place to learn. The area looks like it has a lot of possibilities. If this was my image I would probably crop it to a pano. Maybe crop it up close to the old wheel and cut out most of the sky. A little more contrast might help also. Have a great time shooting.

Thanks for the comments Richard. I'm just learning about composition and kind of was wondering about too much grass below the wheel. I have to learn about my editing program to change the contrast. I'm anxious to learn and am going to try to find some classes around here. Thanks again!

Hi Jeff!
I'm new as well! When I opened the page, I was immediately drawn to your picture. I love it! I agree with Richard on the contrast but I would crop more grass and leave the sky...but that's just me!
I'd wish you good luck but if this first post is any indication, you won't need it!
Peace of the Lord be with you,
Angie

Welcome to the M&N Gallery Jeff. I just love the ghost towns of the western states. I like how the partial wheel leads me to the derelict buildings. Works for me as is. Be sure to take time to comment on others works since you will find this will increase views and comments on your work. Again welcome, and have fun!

A pleasant composition. It would be great to revisit the spot when there is more interest in the sky or a time of day when the quality of light can make the objects pop a bit more. Welcome to a great place to learn.

Welcome Aboard Jeff! I think you could crop down a tad from the sky and also a bit from the bottom grasses, but the comp stands well posted. As Richard stated this is a great place to learn and improve on your photography and I know you're going to thoroughly enjoy NPN. :wavey:

I must say, you're off to a good start, This is a great image and a neat location. My suggestion is to go back in a variety of lighting and weather conditions and shoot it from every angle. You may not get an image you like better than this one, which is quite nice, but I'm betting you do. The light here is a little harsh, try morning or evening if you can. Welcome to NPN where learning is rampart.
