Touch of Color

Taken last summer from near my home.
Nice color but would like opinion on the slight fill-in flash--adds or subtracts from the ambiance?
Nikon D700, 28mm f2.8 Nikkor, f/16

Now, after posting, I note the background is slightly soft... hmmm, why did not I see that before? Anyway, for future reference, what about the foreground lighting.

Thanks, the fisch

I think it detracts, but that is only my opinion. If it were a big rock or larger tree stump maybe. The sky is beautiful. I saw a similar one driving home last night but did not have my camera. Love that sky!!!

I agree with Dottie on this. The grasses are not a significant enough element to be highlighted and only draw your attention away from the main subject, which is the sky. It might have worked better for me if you could see all of the stalks (top to bottom), but even then I think I would have preferred for them not to be lighted. I like to include foreground elements when shooting a sunrise or sunset, but I'm just not sure the grass is enough to merit the highlight. Great sky though.

That of course is just my own opinion, which is the only thing I'm an expert at.

Have you tried darkening the foreground for comparison's sake?

Thanks for the comments and I agree with them all.
I feel like I ruined this photo trying to be too "artsy".
And, yes, I can darken the fore ground and will if I try to print.
Background is slightly soft, too.

Don't kick yourself. It's that willingness to experiment that keeps us learning and improving.

That's one impressive sky Larry. I tend to agree with everyone that the lit grasses don't add a great deal to this image. A crop up from the bottom to remove most of them combined with a little selective cloning to remove the remaining stalks and this would be a fine image. Way to think outside the box whether or not it worked this time around.

I think the use of fill FG might've worked better if there was more there..
You might consider a pano comp, less top, less bottom.
Gorgeous sky :toast:
