A Kestrel's Pose...

by John Blumenkamp

Gallery: AvianPosted March 23, 2011280 views23 comments
Hi everyone... I watched this kestrel one morning as it casually sat on the small branch before reacting to hawk fly close-by overhead... as it did, I was able to capture this pose.

Canon 7D @ 500mm
1/2500 f/5.6 iso400

Thanks for looking,
John

Interesting and different pose - I like this a lot.
Hard to tell with a small image, but detail looks very good. Natural colors and clean BG -
Nice!

Would love to have seen a larger version, but this small version is beautiful, great colors, light, exposure, pose, looks like good detail.

Terrific action, light and detail, John. Love the angled face and catchlight and the clean bg really emphasizes the bird. :toast:

John: I really like this one! Great pose. Gotta love the fact that you can see the tail as well. Great exposure as well with nice details and light on the lower part of the wings. Very very nice. :toast:

Nice job on timing this shot John. Good wing extension and I like the "step off" from the perch.

I have always like the color pattern of Kestrel's and this images really display that. Excellent timing to get this, the wing spread looks great, well done.

Very fine capture of that first movement when taking to flight. The composition is perfect for the shape of the bird with outstretched wings. I am surprised at how good the over all sharpness is with just f5.6.
