Ok, so here's my first go at B&W conversion so please excuse any heavyhandedness!..No, don't excuse anything...let me know what you think! Advice and criticism welcome. This is Barn Bluff and Cradle Mountain in the Tasmanian high country taken from The Walls of Jerusalem National Park. By the way, what looks like haloing behind each ridge is actually haze in the valleys.

Looks prety good to me. I might be tempted to work on the perception of a halo between the first two layers. That one looks more like a halo than the other areas with haze. Also, the foreground contrast and blacks look a tiny bit heavy to my eye.

When you're calling yourself out for heavy handed processing in your introductory comment, you know you're probably on to something. The contrast in the sky seems forced and the heavy blacks at the bottom hide details that don't go unmissed. On the other hand, the weather looks dynamic enough that surely there will be some conversion and contrast adjustment that results in both excitement and the appearance of moderation. I'm not monochrome expert, but I would imagine you could get the most useful feedback from those in the know by including a color (relatively unprocessed) version for comparison.

Thanks for that guys, as soon as I looked at the posted version I did a quick re-work to lighten up the f/g trees and partly address the apparent halo.

Nice job on the re-post. There's a huge improvement just in that quick adjustment.

I think your repost is right on target Neale. Wonderful drama.

Neale, I'm not a very good judge of B&W, because I don't do it.
This scene is very contrasty, but I like it from the darkened FG
to the much lighter cloud section. Even in the dark areas, you
seem to have achieved reasonably good detail. You have many
layers of interest here. That's my opinion. In my opinion,
the repost is an improvement. I like it.

A nice shot, Neale, with some really great drama in the sky. The repost has definitely fixed up the fg, but I don't think there's much you can do about the light hitting the fog in the valleys creating the halos. My only suggestion would be to add a vignette to contain the image and enhance the mood.

Neale, this is a dramatic scene, but for some reason (wish I could say why technically) the sky looks a bit TOO dramatic in the original post. The repost is an improvement for the sky as well as the FG.
