Supermoon

Made it out for the "Supermoon" last night which wasn't as impressive as I'd hoped. Being that I live in suburbia it's difficult to find unencumbered landscapes so I did some photoshop trickery on this image. The black foreground is filled with homes which I eliminated by masking them and using Levels to black them out. I also decided to utilize the liquify tool to correct the "compressed" look a rising moon has when it comes up over the horizon. I also sharpened the moon. Any advice on improving this would be greatly appreciated (specifically removing the chromatic aberration around the moon)

Nikon D300s 300 f4 + 1.7X TC shot from a pillow on my car utilizing a wired cable release
f/13
1.3 seconds
ISO 500

Cropped to about 75%. All work done in CS5 on 27" iMac

Cool shot Luke. Fun looking at this. I was out last night to photography this also. Like you I wasn't as impressed as I had hoped, but it was still nice watching it. I know it was suppose to be about 14% larger and 30% brighter. I have heard it called the Worm Moon because it occurs when the ground is thawing and the worms start to come out. Glad you posted this so I got a different look of it.

Looks like the great pumpkin rising over the pumpkin patch
Seriously, it looks pretty good to me, good balance for the elements here. I probably wouldnt have noticed the blurred rooftops without your disclosure. I usually fix any CA problems in LR--it doesnt look too bad to me, but if it bugs you you could always just select the moon with a sharp edge (refine edge) then clone out the red ring with the surrounding sky. Or expand and use the interior to clone--that way your supermoon gets even bigger! :jump:

Beautiful moon. Too many clouds for me to enjoy it but I was out any way. You did a good job hiding the houses. I couldn't pick them out. Glad someone posted the super moon. Looks good

Cool shot. This supermoon was a bust for me. It didn't even seem as big as a regular full moon here. Even with my 300mm and a 2x tele-extender. I like the color combo in your shot.

Luke,

Didn't even get a chance here in So Cal to many clouds. There was a bit of swell at Royal Palms yesterday, it's really stormy today as I jot this down. To me it look like normal atmospheric distortion around your supermoon. I am glad someone posted it. Thanks for sharing.

Even with the teleconverter, this seems about 14% bigger than I'd expect. The off-center comp works nicely.

While it looks slightly soft, I love the orange glow of the huge moon!
