South Texas is full of these beautiful WP's. I believe their US range is only in parts of Texas and southern oklahoma.

I got lots of images of them, but liked this one best . It shows the colors of both the head and the breast, and it's on an interesting tree.

Beautiful classic WP shot, Sandy. Do you know the ID of the tree?

Phil - I think this is a Chinquapin oak .

Maybe one of the Texans will know for sure - if not, I know who I can ask..

The tree adds a lot to this - I love the textures and colors in the bark.

A very nice shot of this South Texas specialty, nice colors. I could see taking some off the top if you haven't already cropped it much. :toast:

Okay where does one go in south Texas to see these. On my list for a trip next year. Love the pose showing off those excellent colors and the soft light. I like the slightly open bill too.

Lovely image - I especially like the typical pose, curved trunk and the similitude of reddish and yellow-green patches in bird and bark.

I just got my first images of this species this winter in south Texas too. This is a really nice image, I think I'd crop a bit more from the top. Bg and perch are perfect, very sharp.
