Coyote Approaching Kill

From a winter trip to Yellowstone last January. Shooting through trees at a couple of coyotes working an old wolf kill. This one is trying to sneak in out of turn as a more dominant coyote (behind ribs) gives fair warning. I went for as tight a crop as I could and left the two fragments of OOF pine in the lower right, more because I'm not big on cloning. I'd appreciate thoughts on if they are just too distracting.

Rick, I really like the stance of the intruder, also the pano crop. But if you have more on the right I think it would better balance the image. I keep wanting to see more on that side. Nice action.

I think you've got a nice focus on the sneaker given that emphasis, the pine branches are only a slight distraction. The pose and the coyote in the background really tell the story.

Love this just the way it is Rick, your image tells a great story..
Like the second coyote behind the exposed red rib cage, gives it a macabre quality IMO.
Well done! :toast:

Hi Rick,

I like the "cautious and sneaky" stance of the main subject and those red ribs add a lot of visual interest to the image. I don't find the pine branches very distracting and tend to agree with Wayne about wanting to see a LITTLE more to the right. I think the pano crop goes well with the orientation of the main subject, but wonder if adding a little more on the top would help "ground" the subject and pull it a little more off-center vertically (of course, I don't know what's "up there", so my suggested crop could add some unwanted distractions). Nice to hear I'm not the only one who doesn't like using the cloning tool!!

Cheers...

Thanks for the comments. I went back and checked my raw file. The right side is literally at a large tree trunk. I could add the space back in, but it would just be a dark patch of bark. The option to add space on as Brad indicated is more promising. It is more dark river, few highlights which is why I had cropped it out initially but nothing unusually distracting. The second pass at it is here showing the entire room to the top. See if the added space at the top has the desired effect.

I did not even see the OOF twigs when I first looked at the image, so no big deal to me. I like the look of the one coyote approaching and you can just see the snarling of the other coyote. Great job in getting this in bright light with the snow, well done.

PS: I just saw the re-post. I think I like the first pano one better as the reeds at the top of the new image are distracting to me. I might be inclined to crop just a little above the snow line to add just a tad more of the dark area. Either way a fine shot.

Can't add much more, just wanted to say that I like the action and good details. Maybe a little bit tight for my tastes compositionally, but I see the tree branch on the right side would be problematic.
