Dunes after Sunrise

Hi all

I've taken this shot in Oman, a short time after sunrise on my last day in the desert. I've opted for a 3:4 aspect ratio instead of the 2:3 I normally use because I feel that the balance of the image is better like that (I lose some blue in the sky in the process, but I feel that this price is worth paying). What do you think about the earth - sky ratio?

D90, 12-24/4 DX, tripod, blend of two exposures for sky and foreground.

Thanks for looking - and commenting!

Nice shot basil. I like the slow arc of the main leading line, and also like the textures of the sand. The contrast between the warm and cool colors makes for a nice combination. I think this would also work well as a B&W.

Basil, I love the texture on the back side of the dune. The sun gradient on the right is maybe a little hot. Lovely image.

Really nice treatment Basil. The processing looks spot on professional. Excellent dunes shot.

Nice lines, textures and colors. The hot sky on the right does not bother me at all. It seems kind of appropriate for the desert. I might crop a little of the sky, but it works well as presented.

Thanks to everyone for commenting! Bill - I think you're right about the B&W.

Basil, I like this shot. Great texture and patterns. I might have aimed the camera a hair to the right so that the little tuffet of sage (or whatever) was a tad more in the shot. I'm probably the only one who feels this way, the image is too close to being centered, without being centered, and it doesn't feel quite right. Pehaps a few steps to the left would have alleviated this for me.

All that said, there are lovely colors, and I agree with the comment that this would make a great black and white!

Thanks for your comment, Margo. I see what you're saying. I actually have a horizontally oriented version of that shot where I basically extended the frame to the right mostly. I think the leading line works better that way. I may post that one later, but I'm worried that the sun may be too strong in the sky already (if you're interested, check it out on my website, it's in the Oman gallery, towards the end).
