Moorhen Fight

Had some sun today! These moorhens were at each other for a long time - I had to zoom right out to 200mm to get them in, and it was almost impossible to follow them in mid-air when they fought in the air.

Techs:
Nikon D300s
Nikon 200-400mm at 200!
Handheld
F4
1/1250s
ISO 320 - I wish I had upped this to 500 to get 1/2000s...

Thanks Geoff - I cannot remember - there were two fights going on at the same time, and ducks taking off and landing left right and centre. I didn't know where to point the camera next! :biggrin:

They really are vicious; at one point, they were going for each others head and eyes with their beaks!

Oscar, Awesome action. Please post this on Avian, Lucky for me I was scanning the All Photos gallery and your capture caught my eye imediately. I like the slight blurr of the wing tips and with an increase in ISO I would go for more DOF. Love it.

Excellent action shot Oscar - this prompted me to visit my local pond today, but the moorhens were well-behaved :frown: It looks as if the one on the right is getting its neck wrung!

Ian - there were two fights going on simultaneously! They seemed to be going for the head and eyes! I have never seen it happen, but they can fight to the death!
