One of my favorite birds with all of the rich colors. Not a clean background, but this is normal habitat for them.
50D, 500mm, Iso200, 1/125, F8 At sunset, from car w/bb.
LARGER version posted for detail evaluation.

Good pose, detail, and habitat!
Yup, it's where they LIVE and it would be nearly impossible to get a clear BG.
Nice!

Very nice. Love the intent stare and impending action feel that is here. Like the comp that you have chosen. Very sharp-especially for 1/125. Fortunately, these birds stay very still for long periods of time and that helps.

Fine habitat shot, Sharon. Surprisingly sharp for such a long SS! Maybe could do with a little more contrast in the feathers. The bird does stand out very well from the bg. The dark vertical reed behind the bird's head is mildly distracting. Tough to do something about it though. It's nice as posted.

Oh but i love the BG. Nothing too distracting or oof in your face you know? I think it's great and shows exactly what these guys do.

Sharon,
I love the included habitat. It's perfect for this bird. When I first saw the small thumbnail it looked like a background of grapes. I love that you got him with all of the colors that you sometimes don't see on them. Not a critisism but it might stand a slight contrast adjustment to bring out the feathers even more. Nice image Sharon.

What I would like to know is why you would want a clean, plain, sterile background when you can have this. This looks terrific to me, it's a picture like a nature artist would paint. I echo Cheryl M.'s comment also. Very nice nature photo IMO.

Sharon, this is really nice. Love the pose and the composition that suits it perfectly. I agree with the others here about the setting--I really like how you can see what is around him--all those leaves are slightly oof so they don't distract, but clear enough that you get a nice sense for his surroundings. I agree that I would try this with a little more contrast and see what it looks like.
