Willow Flycatcher

This was taken back in June and is I'm pretty sure a Willow Flycatcher, largely based on the distinct call.

Nikon D300s 300 f4 + 1.7X TC HH
1/2000s
ISO 500
-.33 EC

Cropped to 50%, sharpened using Smart Sharpen and USM, cloned a little bit of a branch out from the bottom of the frame in CS5 on a 27" iMac

I like the simple composition with the single perch. The bird looks nice and sharp even with the crop. The shot would also work well in a vertical composition. Ah June is coming. :toast:

nice pose and comp, Luke. Would also work as a nice vertical if you have more perch at the bottom.

I think I see a bit of a diffuse halo around the bird, maybe from brightening? I took it into photoshop and it shows up in a threshold layer from 172-174. Minor though, and hard to see.

edit to add: definitely a Willow/Alder, so if you heard it call, you've got it.

Luke: Nice look at the Flycatcher. I like the perch. For me, with all the lines on this going vertical, I'd like to see a vertical crop. It's strange for me. The smaller version bothers me more than the larger version with this crop. Can't explain why. Nice capture.

Pretty little bird and I like the simple perch and nice blue background.

Background looks a little busy to me Luke, but seriously, I like the pose, the detail looks good and the exposure looks dead on. I'm wondering what kind of plant that is that it's perched on.

Gary,

It's the top of a pitch pine tree (Pinus rigida)

I like this Luke - plenty of detail despite the crop. A vertical might also look good.

cheers

Luke

I like the simplicity of your image, the bird and pine candle take center stage. Love the pose and eye contact. The halo can easily be taken care of. I like this a lot as presented but I also think it would make a strong vertical cmp.

Good one, Luke. Don't know if I'd go vertical, maybe square.
