Based on some suggestions, I reworked this shot. I am hoping it looks much better. Suggestions are still much appreciated. I struggle a bit with red/green colorblindness to sometimes what looks good to me is lousy for the rest of the world.

Canon EOS 7D ,Canon EF 400mm f/4 DO IS USM
1/400s f/10.0 at 560.0mm iso800 with 1.4 extender

Shot taken Londolozi Reserve, Sabi Sands, South Africa

Love the bloody face :toast: , great moment. Just a bit too tight for me.

THat is one beat up lion, but at least he got a good meal… Very dramatic statement about Nature- living and dying, surviving…

I think this version is much more impactful and my overall favorite of the two. The red is much more "in your face". You did a good job lightening up the lion overall. My only suggestion would be to desaturate the blood below the nose just a bit because it apears to stand out more than what I would expect to see.

Now this is one IMPOSING Lion pose! An excellent capture I think of Simba going about his
predatory routine. I like also what I presume to be back-lighting on the top of and on each
side of his mane. Would appreciate to know the location -somewhere in the Serengeti perhaps?

Feed-back to Mike: You mentioned about back-lighting be problematic at times..join the club! Take note that fill-flash is a tool you can use sometimes to compensate for this. I
much prefer to rely only on natural light, but sometimes the flash comes in handy.

Thank Jeff, I must admit, sometimes I get caught up in the moment and I do not think about fill flash, I am happy to have the subject in focus ! Shooting events like this happen in a split second. If I had to think about a flash, the moment is gone...and so it the shot.

Mike, I understand where you're coming from..been there-done that! And of course at the
distance the camera was from Mr. Lion fill flash might not have been too effective anyway.
(I assume you weren't too up close and personal!)

Good luck with your future wildlife imagery.

Hi Michael, what a nice interesting moment, but:-) what I don´t like is the cut legs. Try to crop the image with the focus only on the lion´s face. I think this might look better.
Cheers, Petr

Love the red face! I actually like the tight crop, more emphasis on the face. Maybe even a tighter crop?

Wow, impressive, he's just had one welcome meal, I think
I personally don't mind the tightness of the frame. It works for me as is - very in your face. :toast:
