Ice Maker

This waterfall is building it's own cover by out of icicles that form from the spray and then fuse as the frozen area increases. I shot this in Late December before the falls had completely frozen over. There is enough current and volume of water here to keep flowing in cold weather, but eventually the flow is hidden under a solid cover of ice unless there is an early thaw.

Before someone asks, that's a curled piece of birch bark resting on the ice. I was not about to risk an icy dunking to remove it.

See more detail in the larger version.

Canon 50D
Sigma 17-70mm. f/2.8
0.6 sec. @ f/16; ISO 100
Tripod; 2-sec. timer
Converted to B&W w/blue tint in CS5

Gorgeous icescape Wayne - really jumps off the screen. Perfect shutter speed! Come on Wayne, ease on out there and pick up that bark - where's your sense of adventure?  :wavey:

I like that you have not chosen to give a bue cast to the water - looks very natural and the detail in the large version particularly good. A nice intimate shot.

Nice capture and processing . . . the blue tint feels very natural and the texture of the water complements the ice quite well.

I like the juxtaposition with the action in the flowing water surrounded by the crisp, detailed ice

The subject doesn't really grab me, but the light and textures are very pleasing. I like the sense of whiteness here, that is sometimes lacking in ice images of this nature.

I like this. The window into the water works well as a great framing element. I think it works even a little stronger by cropping out the top 'hole'.

Evocative winter shot! I've yet to see the snow this year. This shot makes me want to dip my paws into the water, moisten my face, and take in the scent of fresh snow-melt... Thanks! :toast:

Nice intimate winter scene Wayne. I especially like your choice of shutter speed, it rendered the texture of the water perfectly.
