Purple Leaf

Another leafscape. I was drawn to this because of the large purple leaf (Sweetgum, I think), but I also liked the general layout of leaves and color, including the pinecone. As usual for me, no rearranging or gardening took place - it is as it was.

LARGER version available for better detail.

D2X w/ Tokina ATX 12-24 @ 24mm
.8 sec @ f/11 - MLU and mc-30 remote release
100 ISO
Singh Ray Circ. Polarizer
Tripod
Capture One 6, CS4, TK's actions

Thanks for any comments and/or critiques.

Bill: When I first looked at this I thought the leaf was too close to the edge but then I saw the pine cone and started to change my mind. I do like the inclusion of both elements and putting the leaf on the power point at this focal length would crop off the pine cone. A wider view might have been an alternative but then you lose the prominence of both the leaf and pine cone by making them smaller. So I'm going to tip my cap to you sir for a marvelous find and some really good decisions on the comp and capture. Many kudos! :toast: :toast: >=))>

I love how the pinecone and purple leaf balance one another. I can never find nicely arranged leafscapes like this....I have to cheat and make my own. :wavey:

Ditto on the comp and the juxtaposition of the two main subjects the leaf and the pinecone. The slight vignetting draws me right into the center as well. Beautiful shot, Bill!

You've certainly got an eye for great compositions that many people would step over. Really like the two main subjects and the green needles a just a little more to this. Well done.

Good looking image Bill. I like the composition and processing but I particularly like the light and exposure. The slight vignette is very effective as well.

Bill, I'm amazed at the colors you have captured. Not only the Sweetgum leaf but also the green leaf, smack dab in the center and the blue in the pine cone.

A great find and fun to view.

Cheers,

Carol

What a wonder medley of color, shapes and textures. It is certainly difficult to achieve a harmonious comp with a seemingly chaotic subjects, but you expertly pulled this together Bill. Searching back in my head I think I recall Guy Tal do something similar years ago. Well done! :toast:

Hi Bill,

I've looked at this image several times. I like the mix of colors and textures but there was something about it that bugged me. I finally figured out what it is.

The corners and edges are slightly darker than the center. Did you do some dodging and burning? My eye is drawn to the brighter center of the image, especially the yellow leaf near the center. The purple leaf and pine cone seem like obvious focal points but they are outside the area of brightest illumination. The result is these three things are competing for my attention.

Thanks all for your comments!

Mark, you're correct; I did place a light vignette around the image. I wondered if that would bother anyone; obviously it does. Sorry 'bout that.

This is lovely Bill. I really like how the smattering of greens and lone crimson leaf are set off amongst all the golden brown leaves in this shot. Great eye to find this compelling composition.
