Hanging On

by Nick Bristol

This picture was made in the Wisconsin River bottoms not far from home. All the other leaves have long since been gone, but these oak leaves were still hanging on as they often do through the winter. Taken in morning light and very heavy fog. I love snowshoeing in these kind of quiet conditions. Thanks for looking.
shot at 75mm, f/16 and 1/5 sec.

Hi Nick,

Really nice framing and processing, the colors look good too. No suggestions for improvement, great job!

Hi Nick,
This photo has a lot of value to me, is one of those that show that a beautiful photo can be made from common elements, here you just have a group of trees but the fog, the separation between the trees and the golden leaves create a very special scene.
I really like your composition cutting the bottom and the top.
Great photo.

Your shots keep on getting better and better Nick. This one has it all in my opinion(which doesn't count for much around here). The fog does a tremendous job of simplifying and setting the mood here. Your last few posts have inspired me to get a long lens and tree my hand at these types of captures, lord knows we have a enough trees and forest were I live. Awesome again. Cheers

The fog and the resulting gradient as you move up through the composition works really well. Really nice.

A very good composition. I like how the scene is lit from the bottom. This creates a very nice atmosphere. The few leaves still clinging to the branches provide some nice color contrast to the otherwise muted scene. Good work!

Nice job. I like the fact that the fog gives it nice depth and the leaves give you the right balance of color.

Nick,
I think this type of pictures are note easy to make, but you did! The contrast is just perfect, allowing even good detail in the first trees' bark. The colorful leaves and even a soft-green moss(?) also add to the whole result. Great work!

The scene gives me a strong sense of restlessness, like something is about to happen in that forest. The lit background might be the cause. Cool shot, Nick!

Very nice, Nick. I like the trees and fog, especially the line-elements of the branches without the leaves (but the presence of the few leaves that are there are what makes the image).

I have to say, though, that the green trunk is bugging me. I messes up the nice monochrome white-brown-black color scheme you've otherwise got. Perhaps you have another where your position is shifted over to the left a bit, still shooting towards the main leaf cluster?

I'm still jealous...

Thanks for all of your comments on this so far. I really appreciate them. I really wasn't sure if this one would work or not, but I liked it so decided to post it.
Dorin, It is funny that you mentioned the feeling you have looking at this. As much as I like these woods, and as much time as I have spent in them, I too get the feelings you had. It has always been that way there for me. Maybe not scarry, but I always keep looking around wondering what might be there. I guess these kind of conditions make it even more so
Mark, I do have a couple of other comps of this, but this is the only one that seemed to work for me in the horz comp. I do have a vert one that I like quite a bit however. I'll have to look and see if it shows the green like this one does.
Thanks to all of you for your thoughts with this one so far. Nick

This is exquisite, Nick. Isolating the leaves as you have, against the wonderful lines of the trees and that amazing fog, works extraordinarily well. Outstanding image.

Nice arrangement of trees. It's the atmosphere, and clinging leaves that really take this one to a special place visually. Excellent!!!!!
