Zebra Longwing (I think)

Gallery: Macro & Close-upPosted February 7, 2011653 views17 comments
As you may know from my previous post, I'm no macro guy, but I thought I would share another with you. I think I've ID'ed this correctly, but if not, please correct me. The wingtips are a bit OOF, but I just chalk that up to me not knowing what the heck I'm doing on closeups. If I get the chance to shoot more of these hopefully I'll get better.

D2X @ 70-200 VR @ 200 (VR on)
1/160 @ f/5.6
250 ISO
No filters
Handheld
Capture One 6, CS4

Thanks in advance for any suggestions or comments.

Bill: For a novice you're doing pretty well  . ID is spot on and the capture and processing are very nice. The real trick with butterflies is to get your sensor parallel to the wings and then wait until the wings are all the way open. You almost have to hand hold so having VR is a great plus. I usually put the camera on burst mode and shoot away. Out of 4 or 5 captures one will usually come out pretty well. Really nice job on this one. >=))>

Excellent shot- Nice colours, details and BG- not easy the composition with the white flowers behind the subject- well done, Fabio

Bill:
This is gorgeous. You should definitely do more of these.
One of the things macro shooters struggle with is the DOF which gets very shallow as you get closer to the subject and the tip from Bill F is spot on. Unlike flora studio work, one doesn't usually have the luxury of doing focus stacking with insects.

I like the composition and the natural appearance of this photograph, to me it includes aspects of habitat and background while still making a fairly strong artistic statement.

Bill you are a photographer! It doesn't matter if you are not a macro guy. Your image is terrific. You past on in a most favourable way the beauty of nature. That is all that counts.
