Night Colors

This is my first post at the NPN so I'm pretty excited! I've silently followed the NPN website for a long time and it had and still has a huge impact on my development as a nature photographer. So, naturally, the time comes for me to join in.

I chose this image to be my first post because it's one of my personal favorites and my first really successful star trails nightscape. This is a monumental rock formation (The Rock Mushroom) located near the medieval fortress Asara, Eastern Rhodope Mountain, Bulgaria.

In "Night Colors" I recorded the emotions I had accumulated during my trips to this magnificent place. From the overwhelming feeling when I first looked down the rocky plateau to the beautiful calmness of the starlit night spent in protection of the rocky niches.

From technical point of view this is a single 1 hour and 15 minutes exposure started about two hours after sunset. I’ve used the moonlight to define the fore and middle-ground and emphasized them by star trails and light pollution in the background. The symbiosis between natural and artificial light is ever symbolical.

Camera: Canon EOS 30D
Lens: Tamron 17-50 f/2.8
f/5.6
ISO 200
Focal length: 17mm

I've been tempted to post this image to the Landscapes gallery but maybe this is the best place for it because of the lights from the villages in the background.

Thank you for your comments and critiques!

Cheers

Welcome to NPN and the M&N Gallery (which is the correct gallery for the reason you explained) Boris! I like the prominence of the rock form and while I am not a big fan of star trails (just a personal preference) I think they work well here as well as on the images on your website. Nice first post. Only suggestion I have is to minimize the brightness of the village lights in the center and to the left since they draw the eye there. I use recovery in LR3 or Tony Kuyper's Luminosity Masks in CS5 (they work in other PS CS versions as well).

Another suggestion is to comment and or critique other's images since you will find people will view and comment on your work more often. Again welcome to NPN and have fun!

Great shot, I think you handled this perfectly as far as technical details - the one improvement you could have made would be to go a hair lower (or to the left?) with the tripod so as to block out the lights in the background. Nice!

Welcome to NPN. I like the detail you captured. I'm with Eva in that I don't normally like star trails, preferring to go for the pinpoint look, but the trails work in this image.

Nice photo Boris. I like the background tones and the star trails. For a night shot though, the FG comes across as being too bright and has the appearance of a flash being used, and that artificial appearance isn't my cup of tea. While I do like this overall as it is, if you were to darken the landscape to give it more of a nighttime atmosphere, it'd be stronger from my point of view.

Welcome to NPN.

Boris ...love the frame and the composition that you have done here ...striking composition. I go by kenn's point that the foreground is a bit bright, could the brightness of the overall frame be brought down a tad bit ..well thats personal ..

Well done ....and hope to see more of your work on NPN..

Hey Boris, I'm a bit surprised it took so long to post this. Great shot! I like the "solid" rock against the "moving" starscape. I could see bring the brightness down a hair or two. :toast:

I can see why you chose this as your first post. It's a wonderful shot! I can see bringing down the brightness of the foreground and rock just a little. I feel this will further enhance the night time mood of the shot. Great first post!

Thank you again guys! Well, so far I've always striven to keep my night exposures normalized usually resulting in a bright foreground. Next time I will keep your advices in mind.
