WC#468 - Ernie & Afghan

by Richard Ditch

Gallery: Weekly ChallengePosted January 30, 201186 views10 comments
Date: December 5, 2010
Equipment: Nikon D200, 55-200 Nikkor @ 80mm, hand held
Exposure: Aperture priority matrix metered, ISO 400, 1/20th, f/5.6
Raw, PS CS3 on G4 Mac, full frame

Just a quick grab shot from last month, when I noticed Ernie (one of our two indoor-only cats) in a playful mood. He decided he could hide under this afghan hanging from the arm of a chair.

Luckily I had my Nikon D200 handy with the modest 55-200 "plastic" zoom mounted nearby. So I got down on the floor with the camera and focused on Ernie. This was at 80mm, ISO 400, f/5.6 and 1/20th second without flash. The camera was handheld but braced as best I could manage and surprisingly sharp at that slow shutter speed.

Richard,
as I just said to Barbara I love cats and this comp pays tribute to their beauty and elegance.
Very fine colors and eyes. Well done.

The colors and placement are just excellent. Changing this to 4:3, cropping from the right might improve, but that's very minor.

not bad for a cat photo, Richard :). I like how he is gazing directly at you, and you did a fine job holding still for 1/20 exposure

Cool--has a nice 'studio' look to it. The difference in the eyes makes the shot.

Amazing sharpness at 1/20th Richard, a "10" on the cute scale too.
I agree with Rob, not bad for a cat photo

Wonderful image, 1/20th and on the floor but still looks good, I like how one eye is in the light and the other in the shadows, very entertaining.

I nearly didn't look at this Richard until I saw your name. As always it was worth it. I agree with Stan that this does have a nice "studio" feel to it but natural and un-staged as well. Of course it fits the theme as well.
