Canon 1D Mark 4 With EF 500mm f4 & 1.4 tc

Had my 2nd go at some short eared owls. This one was shot in heavy overcast. Thanks for looking.

Good looking image Michael. I like the echoes of the blue post in the bg and the verticals running through the image. The owl looks pretty good too. (smile)

Nice pose and eyes.
I really like the BG here, with the blues echoing the bluish post.

Beautiful image ..and you have got a stunning BG here, like a canvas in a studio. The space on the right could have been one wee bit more IMHO ..well thats a personal choice ..
well done

Nice pose, I like the eyes and the detail of the bird.
Very appealing BG as well.

I like the comp Michael. The BG is great for sure. I agree with the other comment on a bit more canvas on the right. In the larger image the bird looks just shy of tack sharp, but not bad at all. Wish I had this image in my files. Heck, would love just to see one of these birds.

I feel you need to play around with the composition here, otherwise I love the colours, the Owl, and the BG.

cool owl, Mike--I'd be thrilled just to see one too. I like the setting a lot, but agree that just a hair more room on the right would help the comp. Larger version isn't tack sharp, did you use a tripod here?

Mike I can't believe you're photogtraphing these guys so close to my home and I can't get out in the field to see them! Hopefully this weekend they will still be around... not sure if the added snow will hurt or help.
Congrats on the perch as nice "natural looking" ones are so hard to find down there and getting it up on something sets it off from that BG perfectly as opposed to it being on the ground. I would try and boost some the contrast and maybe warm up the WB on this a little.
To attempt to answer Brian's shot for Mike (hope you don't mind) this was almost certainly taken using a beanbag from Mike's truck window. It's rare that he busts out the tripod!

Mike,
The setting is beautiful and I love the streaks of blue at the top of the frame, the weather worn post makes for a nice perch. I love the pose of the owl and the look you appear to be getting. The owl doesn't look very sharp in the larger version, perhaps another round of selective sharpening?
