Moon Rise-Mattamuskeet

Lake Mattamuskeet in eastern North Carolina where many varieties of ducks & geese travel for the winter. This moon rise over the lake was stunning. The few white tundra swans are visible on the water.

This was taken just after sunset.

Very pleasant image. Simple element-wise, but that big ol' moon is what really makes it.

Gorgeous on so many levels... those birds a little spooky! I would tone down the two brightest ones and clone out the ones behind the tree on the left which is distracting and visually confusing (especially on the smaller version). I bet a big print of this would look amazing.

Very cool, Wick! The big and reddish moon is beautiful, and the geese add so much to the scene!

Very well composed, I like how the angled line of trees draws your eye towards the moon. The birds adds some nice highlights to the image.

Wonderful exposure! Getting the moon right brought the rest of the tones in line with this very graphic image. Well done.

Makes me want to shed my clothes, dive in deeply, and break the surface howling like a free man.....without alaming the geese, of course. :toast:

I really like the way you composed this. The color contrasts are wonderful. I see a couple of trees that would make great subjects on their own. Really nice one, Wick.

What's not to like?!! The diagonal of the treetops really highlights the moon as a focal point! And the two little trees complete the diagonal (and the framing effect) perfectly!

The moon's size seems well balanced with it's own reflection that really puts me in this great scene Wick.

This has tons of mood. Really good image. Maybe you might have moved sligthly to the left to put the moon more between the trees? For the postprocessing, my two cents: try a more panoramic format, to focus the view on the interesting part of the image while excluding some "blank" sky and water, at the same time to reinforce the visual rythm of the vertical trees. The other suggestion is reducing a bit the "clarity" LR effect on the moon, if you know what I mean (there is a kind of halo around).
I tell you all this because with just a few minutes of work you have here a real winner I would hang on my wall! :) very well done Wick

Wick,

this is an absolutely beautiful and killer scene. What a wonderful capture of the rising moon and captured in a location where this just all fits together. Awesome!

Having said that, I'll go against the mainstream here and say that I find the geese somewhat distracting. Just after sunset and these guys are almost glowing white? almost unnatural to me. But then, of course I wasn't there. If anything, you might consider cloning the white parts out of the 2nd and 3rd tree from the left. I can't really make out that those are geese, let alone birds. The ones in the center are more obvious.

Anyway, just a differing point of view. I find the moonrise, reflection, colors and the line of trees to be spectacular.

Wick, very nice my friend! Had a great time with you and the other photogs on our workshop. Hope to see you again in the summer on Roan. BTW, those big white birds are tundra swans!

Really unique and beautiful photograph Wick. Personally I think the swans really enhance the photo as they are. They look very unusual.
