Bosque Sandhill

Just returned from a few days at Bosque del Apache. Have only begun to sort through the files, but here is an early favorite from the crane pools in morning light. For these takeoff/flight shots, I used strictly manual exposure (hearkening back to when I used to shoot landscapes with an all manual film camera!), and was pleased with the results, especially for the first time using manual in years.

Your comments and critiques are appreciated. Please view larger version if possible.

Canon 7D, 500mm, tripod

1/5000, f/6.3, ISO 400. manual exposure. Full frame, no crop.

Wonderful image! Exceptional detail in the crane (seen best in the large image) in a great pose, and very nice BG. Nice exposure for manual and perfectly-positioned if full frame!-

Really nice light on this crane, Brian. Great detail and the background really compliments the bird well. Pretty good camera work to get this full frame. Great image.

Wonderful light and good pose with excellent detail Brian. :toast:
If you were using manual, why did you set a 1/5000SS? Surely half of that would have frozen the action and then your ISO could have halved too. Just a thought

Nice light and beautiful colors are my immediate reaction. The photo gives a nice suggestion of habitat too. Different photo from Bosque than I am used to seeing on line.

Beautiful image, the bird stands out almost 3D from the background. Terrific detail and sharpness throughout the bird and I really like the habitat detail in the background. Graham

Really sweet light Brian. Love the colors on the crane as well as the detail and sharpness. Nice BG to go along with the bird. Full frame brings all the details to front. Well done.

Excellent shot Brian. Everything came together on this one, the larger image looks great and getting a full frame shot is the finishing touch, way to go.

The only way to improve this is to have shot through a pickup window. Absolutly stunning!

Bosque at its best, the larger image just pops illustrates the advantage of the size difference.

Well captured image.

Hi Brian. This is a beautiful flight shot with great aerodynamics, superb details, and an excellent background for the crane. As for shooting in manual, although I am not a bird specialist, I would think that the natural thing to do for a flight shot like this would be to at least raise the ISO to 400 to generate a high enough shutter speed. I have been told by a Canon friend that there is certainly no problem with noise at this ISO for the 7D. So no criticism from me here. Also I would think that shooting in manual would be the fastest way of getting the right exposure. A beautifully done capture.
