Shot of a cute little Steenbok in Karoo NP, South Africa. Steenbok are very small antelope though not the smallest in Africa. She wasn't keen on coming out from behind the thorn bush but I like the way she has her ears cocked in different directions. Comments and critiques always appreciated.....thanks for looking!

I agree about the ears Joseph, they are really working hard and telling us about the Steenbok's state of mind. I'm fine with her being partially hidden in the brush, I can still see portions of the legs so that is sufficient. I have been looking at this photo for the last 10 minutes and pondering the dof. Looks like you had enough light to pick your f stop, perhaps more dof would give a nicer appearance to the thorn bush and foreground rocks. It's a debatable point though. :argue:

I like the attentive look she is giving you Joe. I also like the ears adn the surrounding environment. The BG looks a little weird. I have had certain twigs appear this way as well...not really sure why but seems to happen when light wood is amoung darker areas. I think Brad may have even referred to it once as a nervous bokeh...but could be wrong. I do find it distracts though, especially since it is by her ear. It would be easy to smooth that out in processing though.
On a side note, I don't know these animals well, but watched a show yesterday about strange animal couples and they had a yooung Steenbok that a lioness was protecting instead of eating....it was quite strange behavior, but the lion had recently lost her cub and though of it as her baby.

Joe, steenbok are indeed the cutest little antelope in southern Africa. You captured their essence well in this pose, partially hidden in the brush checking you out. It is a good thing the head is in bteween those larger vertical branches and not obscured by it. I think DOF was well chosen.

All around nice shot! I like the expression on the antelope. Good detail and exposure. Thanks for sharing.

Very nice habitat shot, and the expression you captured tells a lot about the antelope's state of mind. Excellent work.

Thanks folks! I've noticed that "nervous bokeh" in a number of shots and to me it almost has a striation appearance. Although I don't like it I don't seem to be able to consistently avoid it! If anyone has any thoughts on how to avoid it, I'm all ears.
