Klondike Bluffs, Arches Nat'l Park, UT, June 2010.

I have to thank Bret Edge for his ifoto guide to Arches for the iTouch. Without it, I would have been totally clueless on where to go and times of day.

This is an hdr image using 4 exposures tonemapped using Photomatix 3.0.
Canon 5D2. 24-105/4. ISO 400. f/13. PLEASE VIEW LARGE.

Ominous, forbidding, beautiful, moody… The dead wood on the left and clouds on the right balance out this pic. I like it.
Something about this processing seems a bit bark.

Edit: Uh dark.

Stunning image. Sometimes it takes careful planning to be in the right place at the right time.
Beautiful processing.
Well done.

That is really well done Doug!! I am getting edgy to get down there in March. I have a 6 week trip planned through out the area. Thank you for the iphone app lead!! That will come in handy  Do you know if there are other apps for other parks in the area?

Doug - The lighting and processing looks perfect. A complex comp arrangement that I have sturggled with during my brief time in the Arches-Canyonland area. The dead trees make for interesting FG elements, but the crazy branches are not always easy to place within the scene. The right side of the image flows nicely, as there is good separation between the branches and sand creating depth. The left edge, the branches become a little lost with the bushes. One soliution is to crop 1/8 off the left, or maybe a more desireablre option would be to dodge the branches of the left branches so they don't blend into the bushes. The lighting realy makes this one sing!

Absolutely beautiful composition Doug. For me, it does seem to retain a bit of that HDR "look", if you know what I'm talking about - not bad, but a little bit. Extremely well balanced. The comp and sunbeams make this special.

I like this one a lot Doug. A very interesting scene and great comp. The colors are really nice along with a wonderful sky. Nice work with the hdr. Bet this would really make a nice looking large print.

I like the comp, the colors and the light. Only nit would be I would like to see a little lightening across the middle part and a smidgeon of darkening in the foreground. But that is really being picky. It's an excellent shot.

Doug,

This is excellent. I especially think you did a great job with the processing. I guess the hdr processing is getting better, or togs are getting better at using it.

Sure, ever so slightly dark, but it goes perfectly with the mood and drama of the sky. This is quite wonderful.

No how about this for the ultimate teeny nitpick. I imagine you'll want to print this? If so, check the very LRC. shows more at the larger size, but it looks like you've got a bit of a plant in the corner that's just a faint, fuzzy green. Might be more noticeable at a larger print size.

Great work Doug!

Wow...so many layers of nature with an infinity of detail! I like how the glowing green of the bushes seems to have an internal light source.
